This book Skylarks War was a very emotional book particularly towards the end. Skylarks was is a book which recounts the life of Clarry, a girl who grew up during the First World War. She was bore by her mother in 1902 who passed away shortly after her arrival. She grew up like any other child except she had a dad who didn’t seam to care about her in the slightest way so each year she would be sent away with her brother to her grandparents house in Cornwall. There she loved it playing with her cousin Rupert all day. As they grow older , they have more fun times together until Rupert decides to join the Army. This book would be perfect for 10 – 12 year olds to learn about WW1. I recommend this book a lot!!! It will definitely be on my shortlist for book to choose for the BCFA!!!
I really enjoyed this book as it was all about the lifestyle in WW1. it was an amazing book and i would recommend it to all ages.

Took me a few chapters to get into but once I actually got into it I enjoyed it immensely. My favourite character is Vanessa as she is so fun and bubbly although I also like Violet as she is quite unusually bossy and interesting. One of my favourite parts of the book was when Simon and Perter cleared out the chimney with a firework. That really is a great idea and they are selling a lot of fireworks right now. This book will go far.

I absolutely love this book because of how quirky and unique the storytelling is: Hilary McKay writes in a completely different style to most people and the family saga of Peter, Clarry and all the challenges they face is beautiful.
Clarry is portrayed as a girl in the early 20th century trying to get an education; something that was extremely rare in those days.
My only problem is that I don’t think it will appeal to everyone because the plot has some dilemma and resolution. It is more smaller parts intertwined together, which some may not like compared to other ‘safer’ reads.
